Everything happens inside this page: your file is read from your disk into your browser's memory, converted there, and handed straight back to you. Ordinary online converters upload your video to a stranger's server, convert it there, and keep a copy for some number of hours. In March 2025 the FBI's Denver field office warned that free online file converters had become a common route for malware and data theft. A converter that never transmits your file removes that entire category of risk.

Frequently asked questions

Are my videos really not uploaded?
No, and you can prove it yourself in about ten seconds: load this page, switch your device to airplane mode or turn off Wi-Fi, then convert a video to MP4. It works, because the conversion code is already running on your machine and never needs the network.
What is the largest file I can convert?
The fast path handles files up to roughly 4 GB, and the compatibility engine for older formats up to about 2 GB. Animated GIF output is capped at 200 MB of input because GIFs balloon in size. The practical ceiling is your device's available memory. We've verified 15-minute 720p and 10-minute 1080p conversions on an ordinary desktop, and a phone will manage less than a laptop.
Why is one conversion fast and another slow?
Most conversions use your browser's built-in hardware video engine, which is very fast. Inputs or outputs that engine cannot handle fall back to a full video engine compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once and then works for everything, but it runs on the CPU and is noticeably slower. That slower path is used for GIF output, older formats like AVI, WMV and FLV, and often for HEVC video (the format iPhones record), which many Chrome and Firefox installs cannot decode. Safari decodes HEVC natively, so on a Mac or iPhone that footage stays on the fast path.
How do I get the fastest conversion?
Three things keep you on the fast path. First, the browser: H.264 and WebM videos are quick everywhere, but for HEVC video from an iPhone, Safari is the safest bet, since it decodes HEVC natively where many Chrome and Firefox installs have to use the slower engine. Second, size: a lower resolution or the 'Smaller file' quality preset means less to encode, so it finishes sooner and downloads smaller. Third, GIF output and older formats like AVI, WMV and FLV always use the slower engine, so expect its one-time download on first use.
Why did the first conversion pause before the progress bar moved?
Some conversions (GIF output, plus older or HEVC inputs) use a full video engine compiled to WebAssembly. It is about 32 MB and downloads the first time you need it, then stays cached, so later conversions skip the wait. While it downloads and starts up, the progress bar animates to show it is working rather than stuck, and the percentage begins counting once the actual conversion starts. As always, nothing about your file is uploaded during any of this.
Which formats can I convert?
You can convert from almost any common video: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, WMV, ASF, FLV, MPEG, MPG, M1V, MPV, VOB, M2TS, MTS, TS, 3GP, 3G2, OGV, SWF, DivX and HEVC among them. Outputs are MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI and animated GIF for video, plus MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC and OGG when you want audio only. Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes, in any modern browser. Very large files are more likely to run out of memory on mobile than on a laptop, so if a big conversion fails on your phone, try it on a computer or pick a smaller resolution.
How long does converting a video take?
On a typical desktop with hardware acceleration, roughly one minute of processing for every three minutes of 720p video, or every two minutes of 1080p. A 15-minute 720p video takes around 4 to 5 minutes. Phones and older laptops are slower. A live progress bar shows the percentage, elapsed time, and a time-remaining estimate measured from your own device's actual speed.
Why is my converted file bigger or smaller than the original?
Converting re-encodes the video, so the output size depends on the quality preset and resolution you chose rather than on the input. Pick 'Smaller file' or a lower resolution to compress; pick 'Best quality' to stay as close to the original as possible.
Does this site take up storage on my device?
A little, and only so it can work offline: the app itself (about 1 MB) plus, if you've used a conversion that needs the compatibility engine, its one-time 32 MB download. That's roughly 35 MB total at most. Your actual videos are never kept: they're processed in memory and released when you leave. The cache is ordinary browser storage, so your browser reclaims it automatically if your device runs low on space, and you can remove it any time with your browser's 'clear site data' option.
