Frequently asked questions
- Will converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
- Converting re-encodes the video, so there is always some change, but with the Balanced or Best quality preset the difference is hard to notice. If you need the smallest file, the Smaller preset or a lower resolution trades some quality for size. You choose the trade-off.
- Does this handle iPhone MOV files with HEVC video?
- Yes. HEVC, also called H.265, is what recent iPhones record. Safari decodes it natively, and on Chrome or Firefox a built-in compatibility engine handles it, so your iPhone footage converts either way.
- Why is my MOV file so large?
- Phones record at high bitrates, and a few minutes of 4K can run to hundreds of megabytes. Converting to MP4 with the Balanced or Smaller preset, or at a lower resolution, usually produces a noticeably smaller file that still looks good.
- Is my video really not uploaded?
- No. Your file is read and converted on your own device and never sent anywhere. You can prove it: convert one MOV while online, then switch to airplane mode and convert another. It still works, because everything needed is now on your machine. (HEVC video from newer iPhones may need a one-time engine download on Chrome and Firefox; Safari decodes it natively.)
